Household Tip of the Day 9/27

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Well after spending the weekend at the cottage and using my ever favorite cast iron pans to cook in… I have to say, this is a handy tip!  I love cooking in cast iron… there is nothing like it!

Cast Iron Pans: To gently and effectively clean your cast iron skillets after most uses, wipe out excess food with a dry paper towel, then sprinkle salt inside the pan. Wipe clean with a clean, dry paper towel. The salt acts as an abrasive to scratch off any stuck-on particles of food without using soap and water, which can remove your seasoning. For stubborn stuck-on food, use a putty knife to scrape it off. You may, however, need to reseason the pan after doing this.

Household Tip of the Day 9/19

Sunday, September 19th, 2010

We use lots and lots of garlic in my house… so any tip to help keep the bots of garlic fresh longer are always welcome!

I am loving this one..

Peel garlic and store in a covered jar of vegetable oil. The garlic will stay fresh and the oil will be nicely flavored for salad dressings.

Household Tip of the Day 9/18

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

I personally HATE to pay for the expensive cans of tomato juice. However, I HATE the lack of flavor in the cheap brands too.. so I found a tip that I am certainly going to try very, very soon!

To  improve the flavor of inexpensive tomato juice, pour a 46-ounce can of it into a refrigerator pitcher and add one chopped green onion and a cut-up stalk of celery.

WARNING: Today’s tip is another one that may make your eyes water! :)

Peel and quarter. Place one layer deep in a small pan and freeze. Quickly pack in bags or containers while frozen. Use as needed, chopping onions while frozen, with a sharp knife.

I LOVE this tip! I have purchased too many bags of frozen diced onions just for convenience.

Household Tip of the Day 9/16

Do you get annoyed when you grab your bag of brown sugar and it is all hard?  I found a tip on how to keep it fresh!

Wrap brown sugar in plastic bag and store in refrigerator in a coffee can with a snap-on lid.

What a great tip!  Now I just need to have my mom save a coffee can for me.. cuz I am simply not old enough to drink coffee yet.  LOL!! Just kidding.. but that is what I always tell people when they are shocked by the fact that I do not drink it.

Household Tip of the Day 9/14

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

I always hate buying vegetables and within a day or 2, they are starting to get bad already!  Well I found a tip on the handy dandy internet that I am hoping helps solve this issue for Lettuce and celery…

Store in refrigerator in paper bags instead of plastic. Leave the outside leaves and stalks on until ready to use.

Household Tip of the Day 9/13

Monday, September 13th, 2010

Wow.. I learned something new already this morning!  I am one of those people who does not like to keep my egg carton.  I like to use my egg tray in the fridge instead.  But how do I know when the eggs are stale or not? Hmm.. this has been my dilemma for a while now.   So I have resorted to keeping the darn carton so I know the date!  Well I found a handy tip on the wonderful world wide web that will make things a little easier ..

Want to know if your eggs are fresh or stale?  Well according to the internet…

To find out if an egg is fresh, immerse it in a pan of cool salted water. If it rises to the surface, it is stale, but if it sinks, it is fresh.

Well who knew?? And if you did.. why did you wait so long to tell me? LOL!

Have a great week everyone.

Household Tip of the Day 9/12

Sunday, September 12th, 2010

Today I am sharing one of my favorite tips of the kitchen!  I used to HATE to peel potatoes.  Therefore, I would think of every reason under the sun not make homemade mashed potatoes, etc.  Then someone shared a tip with me that I have used for about 2 years now.. and I LOVE  IT!

Do you hate peeling potatoes?  Then let me ask you.. why do you do it? ;) .  There is a super easy way to remove the peeling from potatoes!  Simply score a line around your potatoes with a paring knife and then put them straight into a pot and boil them for about 15 minutes.  Then remove them into a dish of ice water (yes, with ice cubes) and let it cool for about 10 seconds.  Once it has cooled a little so you can stand to handle it, pick it up and slide the peeling right off!

How easy was that?! Try it.. trust me.. you will LOVE IT too.

Household Tip of the Day 9/7

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

With the long 3-day weekend behind us, its back to the grindstone!  The good news is only 4 short days until the weekend is here again!

Today’s tip is one I personally use at home A LOT!

Precook Ground Meat For Recipes

I especially like to use this tip when I can find a good sale on Ground Beef or any ground meat you use in recipes.  Buy your ground meat in bulk!  Typically you will save a little per pound by buying in bulk anyway.

Brown it all up at once then freeze it in 1/2 to 1 pound bags.  I usually leave a little of the grease in with the meat (don’t put it in the freezer bag until it has cooled of course!) so it is not dry when you are ready to use it.

When you have a recipe that calls for browned ground beef (or your choice of ground meat), remove a bag from the freezer and heat it up in a frying pan with a little bit of water.  Drain as usual.

This cuts down tremendously on the time it takes to prepare your meals during the week!
