Household Tip of the Day 9/27

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Well after spending the weekend at the cottage and using my ever favorite cast iron pans to cook in… I have to say, this is a handy tip!  I love cooking in cast iron… there is nothing like it!

Cast Iron Pans: To gently and effectively clean your cast iron skillets after most uses, wipe out excess food with a dry paper towel, then sprinkle salt inside the pan. Wipe clean with a clean, dry paper towel. The salt acts as an abrasive to scratch off any stuck-on particles of food without using soap and water, which can remove your seasoning. For stubborn stuck-on food, use a putty knife to scrape it off. You may, however, need to reseason the pan after doing this.

Household Tip of the Day 9/6

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Happy Labor Day all!  I hope you are all enjoying your long weekends and the end of your summers in the US. Be safe!

Are you finding these useful?  I hope so…

Wow.. I would NEVER have thought of this one… I have thrown away so many sponges!  But I do have to add, for my daily dishes, I like to use a clean washcloth or bar mop and just toss it in the laundry at the end of the day.

Here is a great tip from the web…

Sanitize Sponges in the Microwave

Bacteria and fungus – even mold – can grow on a moist sponge under the right conditions. You may use your sponge with dish soap or other cleansers all the time, but that’s no guarantee. To kill micro-organisms in your sponges, put them in the microwave for a couple minutes with bowl of water with a tiny bit of lemon juice.  You can do this as needed, rather than throwing your sponges out left and right… and they come out smelling better too!! You can also toss them in the dishwasher if you are using the sanitize/heat dry cycle to sanitize them.
